Fillings
Dental fillings are used to replace missing areas in the tooth’s structure to due to breakages or caries. Once the decayed portion of the tooth is removed the dentist will fill the area with either of a number of different materials.
Dental amalgam is the traditional material used for dental fillings. This material is made up of a mixture of metals including mercury, silver, tin and copper.
Although there is mercury in dental amalgam once it is combined with the other metals it is harmless.
Dental amalgam is known for its strength and durability over other materials although they are not always the most popular option due to their appearance.
Amalgam fillings are the only type of filling that will be provided through the NHS.
